A Screenwriters Blog

Welcome

"What makes a film great?" The answer is simple.

Great film like any other form of great art must

evoke an emotional response, good or bad.

It's got to move me, make me question why

this is so and what it says about me

as an individual.

I have called the blog "Celluoid Heroes".

Taken from a song by "The Kinks".

Did Bruce Lee die at the end of Fist of Fury?

Why was Charles Bronson so cool?

How do I balance the revolution scene in A Fistful of Dynamite with the parochial house scene in The Field?

Do the McDonagh brothers write screenplays and then see how many words they can take out of them?

Why could I not decide if I wanted to be The Good, The Bad or The Ugly?

Director: Oliver Schmitz

Writers: Chris Marnewick (novel), Brian Cox (adaptation)

Stars: Andre Riseborough, Steve Coogan, Inge Beckmann

What a title. I can’t stand Steve Coogan as a comedian, but he can bloody well act. This is a crazy story on many levels but mostly because it’s based on true events. “You cannot ask a man to be shepherd and butcher at the same time”. Powerful!

Director: Jim Sheridan

Writer: Jim Sheridan, John B. Keane (play)

Stars: Richard Harris, John Hurt, Sean Bean

A movie that pulls at my heart strings in the exact opposite way A Fistful of Dynamite did. Just goes to show how film can make one question one’s feelings and beliefs from both sides of the coin. John Hurt and Sean Bean are marvellous. The scene in the Parochial house for me, is Richard Harris finest hour and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stick up any time I watch it.
