A Screenwriters Blog

Welcome

"What makes a film great?" The answer is simple.

Great film like any other form of great art must

evoke an emotional response, good or bad.

It's got to move me, make me question why

this is so and what it says about me

as an individual.

I have called the blog "Celluoid Heroes".

Taken from a song by "The Kinks".

There are many contenders but one stands above the rest. "Let me get this right. You were down the park"

Sometimes the only thing a great scene needs is a song. Two great examples...

Director: Paddy Considine

Writer: Paddy Considine

Stars: Peter Mullan, Olivia Coleman, Eddie Marsan, Ned Dennehy

Paddy Considine never lets you in cheap. He grabs your emotions in the opening credits and hands them back bruised and battered as the curtains close. Tyrannasaur, his debut in the directors seat is a wonderful, soul searching, gut wrenching, heart breaking masterpiece. Suppose when you cast Olivia Coleman and Peter Mullan it makes the job a lot easier. I'm not going to waste words because it's best served straight in the face. You'll need the stomach for it but to quote Damien Dempsey from my favourite scene..."You grow strong, or you fall."
