A Screenwriters Blog

Welcome

"What makes a film great?" The answer is simple.

Great film like any other form of great art must

evoke an emotional response, good or bad.

It's got to move me, make me question why

this is so and what it says about me

as an individual.

I have called the blog "Celluoid Heroes".

Taken from a song by "The Kinks".

Down Terrace (2009)

Director: Ben Wheatley

Writers: Ben Wheatley, Robin Hill

Stars: Robin Hill, Robert Hill, Julia Deakin, Michael Smiley

I have a soft spot for gangster movies, especially British ones. “Down Terrace” is a lesson on what you can achieve with a budget of ten grand. It’s also a bloody good movie. The acting is understated but more importantly, believable. When Bob says, “You’re only as good as the people you’re with”, it’s gospel. Michael Smiley, a regular in Ben Wheatley films gives another surreal performance as a stay at home hitman.

To be considered the dogs bollox of screenwriting the title will need to be snatched from the brothers McDonagh, Martin and John Michael. In Bruges sets the bar. The genius is everywhere. A perfect script, brilliantly directed, acted and set in a background that seals the lid on a masterpiece.
